Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials

Development of a Core Outcome Set (COS) for Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs in people with COPD.

General Information

Summary:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is currently the fourth major cause of mortality worldwide and seventh for years lived with incapacity, with a significant social and economic burden. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is established as a fundamental strategy for the management of this disease. However, the heterogeneity between patients with COPD, programs and outcome measures used to assess these patients derive in disparities when evaluating PR effects and hindered comparisons across studies. The development of a Core Outcome Set (COS) facilitates overcoming some of these barriers by defining a minimum set of outcomes that should be reported in both practice and investigation. This study aims to create a COS for PR in people with COPD. The COS will be developed according to the established four phases: i) systematic review of the literature; ii) qualitative interviews iii) delphi survey and iv) literature review with recommendations. The development of this COS will support advances in PR of people with COPD, by informing guidelines and guiding clinicians and researchers in this field.
