Development of a Core Outcome Set for mobility in rehabilitation for adults with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury

Mobility is a key aspect of rehabilitation for an individual who has sustained a moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI). At present, there are no clear recommendations for how mobility should be measured, with > 80 outcome measures that can be used to monitor and report changes on mobility. This poses several difficulties for rehabilitation practice and science if different outcome measures are used. It makes meaningful comparisons between brain injury services challenging to complete. It also impedes the ability to synthesise and compare results from randomised controlled trials to determine the most effective intervention to improve, creating barriers for the provision of ‘best practice’ rehabilitation programs.

This study aims to identify a core outcome set for mobility in msTBI rehabilitation.

Related COS
There is another ongoing registered COS exploring outcomes and patient reported outcome measures after moderate to severe TBI that included mobility outcomes. https://comet-initiative.org/Studies/Details/2223
This COS explores the assessment of general outcomes after a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. In contrast, our proposed COS will develop a list of outcome measure tools to measure mobility outcomes after a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury.

This study will follow the methodology outlined in the Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) Initiative, conducted in 4 phases: phase 1 will identify currently used mobility outcome measures through published and underway reviews, previously established core outcome measures for stroke rehabilitation and data from audits of Australian brain injury services; phase 2 will determine outcome domains of importance by interviewing individuals with lived-experience, and conducting surveys with healthcare professionals and researchers; phase 3 will achieve consensus to identify core outcome measures through the Delphi process; and phase 4 involves the dissemination of the core outcome measure set.
